It wasn’t long ago that I hardly ever painted my nails, let alone paid someone to do it.
Usually I sported simple “naked nails” and didn’t pay much attention to my hands. A manicure felt like such a luxury, something I only imagined done by wealthy women who hung out at the country club. Not something for a working girl like me with a demanding full-time career, responsibilities, and a hectic schedule.
When I did get my nails done it was only for a special occasion. Now was one of those occasions. I had a party to attend for business where I wanted to feel and look my best, all the way to my fingertips. I snuck in a late afternoon manicure, and a sorely needed short break.
The best part of getting your nails done is watching your fingers transform from plain and ordinary to fabulous and glamorous! The worse part is waiting … for … the … nail …. polish …. to …. dry. Let’s just say waiting and being patient are not my top strengths.
In an attempt to keep my mind busy and my nails still, I turned my attention to my bright new bottle of nail color. "What was this delightful color called?" I wondered.

June's Nail Color: "Girlfriend We Gotta Talk!"

July's Nail Color: "My Greatest Gift to Me"
It happens almost every time. As I’m chatting with people before I speak to a group, at least one woman will come up to introduce herself and before I can say a word she starts apologizing. All of a sudden we're in an invisible confessional and she can barely look me in the eye as she blurts out that she's not wearing any polish. She shows me her hands and it's true. She has naked nails! She goes on to tell me that her finger nails are too short, too stubby or too ugly for polish.
I deliberately clear my throat and respond:
